Mark Geragos' failure as Scott Peterson's defense attorney goes well beyond the legendary number of losses racked up by the legions of over-hyped celebrity defense lawyers.
You will recall that in defending shoplifter Winona Ryder, he told the jury to watch the videotape. Naturally, the panel expected some breakthrough in exculpatory evidence, right? The tape showed Winona cutting tags off merchandise, and stuffing it into her large bag. Brilliant, don't you think?
As to Peterson, not that I am unhappy with the verdict and the penalty, consider that this was the death penalty for a first time offender in California.
Outside of the obvious fact that if Peterson had no attorney, and spent all the trial time insulting the judge, alternating with sitting mute and flashing swastikas at the jury, he could not have done worse.
I guess that's why Geragos is so famous.
This is one of the greatest failures in the history of criminal law!
